About Us
The Books in
Homes Australia Programme was originally inspired by Maori author Mr Alan Duff
who wrote the widely acclaimed book "Once Were Warriors". It was founded 13
years ago in New Zealand after realising that failures in adult life often stem
from childhoods spent in homes without books or the ability to read.
The Books in
Homes Australia Programme was founded on this principle in 2001.
The Foundation
aims to help young disadvantaged children improve their reading skills; to help
them develop and maintain a love for reading; which will ultimately broaden
their opportunities later in life.
The children on
the Programme come from:-
&
Low-socio economic circumstances in terms of education, employment and housing;
&
Remote areas of Australia where a high proportion are Indigenous;
&
Schools and communities where there are no proper facilities or access to new
books;
Children who
cannot read will have difficulties in their schooling and will leave before age
16; will have no trade or other qualifications; will not have the ability to
build a better future for themselves or their local community; and will not be
able to find employment or have stability as adults. They will continue to
remain trapped in the poverty cycle.
To date, Books in
Homes Australia has over 10,000 children on its Programme from 110 communities
across NSW, VIC, QLD, SA and WA.
There is no
doubting the positive impact that this Programme is having on these students,
their families, their schools and their local communities.
Our aim is to
reach all of Australia's young disadvantaged children to help improve their
literacy.
Reading is
Australia's Future.
This is where we seek your assistance.
