Research shows that 75% of brain development occurs between birth and the age of three. Being read to from the day they are born helps children develop the essential pre-literacy skills that they need for ultimate success in school, including:

              • How to hold a book, read a page from top to bottom and left to right, and turn pages
              • Assumptions drawn from covers, pictures, and illustrations
              • Early word and letter recognition
              • Strategies to anticipate and predict what will happen next

The Books in Homes 0-3 Programme builds on the knowledge that early intervention, parent involvement and supportive communities play a critical role in the growth and development of young children.  Its goals are to:

              • Create a legacy of books in homes, building a love of reading and thirst for knowledge
              • Involve families in their child’s early learning
              • Improve literacy in Australian Standard English for children and their families
